5 Poetry Pairings for this Summer’s Hottest New Albums

Today is a big day in music, with nine exciting albums dropping all at once. For the poetry fans who love music just as much, we’ve selected five poetry collections to read while you listen to this summer’s hottest new music. So find a nice shady spot to sink into while you discover new music and poetry pairings.

Amanda Shires: Take It Like a Man

“Take it Like A Man” is the title track on Americana singer-songwriter Amanda Shires’ upcoming album. This album is anticipated to be unlike anything the Grammy-award-winner has released in the past. Poetic, intense, and ruminating, this upcoming album shows the world what turning 40 looks like from her eyes. Pair this album with Carol Ann Duffy’s 2005 collection Feminine Gospels. The highly awarded poet blends the mythical with the confessional in this powerful rendering of female identity.

Beyoncé: Renaissance

This will be Queen Bey’s seventh studio album. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the artist stated, “with all the isolation and injustice over the past year, I think we are all ready to escape, travel, love, and laugh again. I feel a renaissance emerging, and I want to be part of nurturing that escape in any way possible.” Pair this highly anticipated new album with a copy of MissSettl by Kamden Hilliard. Released in April of this year, MissSettl takes a vibrant, playful, and experimental approach to strategizing a resistance to life under white supremacist capitalism.

Florist: Florist

Brooklyn-based indie folk band Florist comes out with their fourth album today. This self-titled album is a culmination of the band members’ decade-long history of friendship and collaboration. Known for their soft ambient sound, Florist will paint a lovely soundscape for Franny Choi’s 2019 collection Soft Science. This poetic exploration of identity and consciousness will send you on a journey of thoughtful introspection.

King Princess: Hold On Baby

Singer, songwriter, and producer King Princess will be dropping her sophomore album today, In a statement, the artist said, “I want this album to give you all some strength in accepting ourselves; as chaotic as we can be . . . That’s what King Princess has always been about at its core. Making a home for us to feel safe and weird and messy and imperfect. You are not alone in your feelings. I bet you I feel and have felt the same. This album is for anyone who needs a sanctuary to be vulnerable.” This comforting and accepting album makes a great companion to Shelley Wong’s As She Appears, released in May of this year. This collection embodies the expanse of desire and self-love, drawing on the natural world, art, and beauty.

Maggie Rogers: Surrender

Another sophomore studio release today comes from the Grammy-nominated Maggie Rogers. Her 2019 debut, Heard It in a Past Life, took the music industry by storm, and now Rogers is ready to add another layer to her career. Surrender is anticipated to examine cultural consciousness, spirituality, and the ethics of pop power through danceable, hypnotic beats. “Joy with teeth” is what Rogers called it in an interview with The New York Times. This combination of gravity and lightness pairs perfectly with Patricia Lockwood’s 2014 collection Motherland Fatherland Homelandsexuals, in which the Booker Prize finalist creates a colloquial and incantatory examination of political, sexual, and social norms.

Discuss performance poetry – what does it make you think?
Look at other Michael Rosen poems – which ones do you like, why?
How does Michael’s work compare and contrast with another poet?
Teachers or Homeschoolers – work with your kids to create your own performance piece for selected poems.
Pupils could create their own story poems about favourite foods, strict teachers or a Bear Hunt.

“I wrote a book of poems for children called ‘The Hypnotiser’ some years ago and then it went out of print. I couldn’t get anyone to reprint it, so I asked my son Joe to film me performing the book.” –

Noice!

Who Is Michael Rosen?
My first book for children was called Mind Your Own Business and it came out in 1974. Quentin Blake did wonderful line drawings for it.

Ever since then, I’ve been doing these things:

Writing books

Writing articles for newspapers and magazines

Going to schools, libraries and theatres and performing the poems in my books

Helping children write poems and stories

Making radio programmes, mostly about words, language or books

Appearing on TV, either reading books, or talking about books

Teaching at universities about children’s literature

Running workshops for teachers about poetry

In any week, I might be doing all of these things! To tell the truth, I don’t really know what I’m doing tomorrow, unless I look in my diary to see.

Review of The Hypnotiser
Right class 6, RIGHT CLASS 6, I’m talking, I’m talking, I want complete quiet and that includes you, David Alexander, yes you…’ ‘The Outing’, by Michael Rosen, just one of the fantastic and hilarious poems from his short story and poetry collection The Hypnotiser. This particular poem was read to me as a young child in primary school time and time again. Each time the names in the poem were changed to the names of the pupils in my class. It never got old, or less hilarious and I wouldn’t hesitate in reading this to my future classes during my teaching career.

Other great poems from this collection include ‘The Car Trip’; a highlight of the sibling chaos that goes on in the back of the car when Mum is driving: ‘He started it. I didn’t. He started it…’, ‘Tomato 1’; the gruelling ordeal of being given a tomato to eat by your mother and you simply just hate tomatoes, and ‘Tidy Your Room’; every child’s nightmare. Each and every poem and short story relates to children through typical experiences that most would have endured. This book enlightens children’s love and enthusiasm for poetry, an almost forgotten about genre for most children; a runner up to fiction books.

This book can have many uses in the classroom; appropriate for children in Key Stage Two it can be read by the teacher at the end of the day during story time, like in my own experience at primary school. Or, during a poetry topic in Literacy, this book could model fun, interesting, age appropriate poetry that will inspire children to write their own poems. Likewise for shared reading; this book would be fantastic to put under the visualiser and look through with the class at the how poems are written, their structure, do they rhyme? do they tell a story? All sorts of things can be addressed with the class as a whole.

This book needs to be shown to children, whether at school on the class bookshelf, or online where you can find video clips of Michael Rosen performing these poems; a great filler for those odd five minutes that arise during the busy school day. A Must read, not just for children but teachers as well!
